Story Description

He forgot his summoning materials. So he used bread, a few coins, and his own blood. It's Summoning Day at Vanderfar Academy, and third-year Elliot Vanderfar has remembered everything except the one thing that matters: the materials, still sitting back in his dormitory. His name is called. The whole hall turns to look. So the headmaster's son walks up to the circle, empties his pockets — one slice of toast, a few stray coins, a few strands of his own hair — nicks his thumb, and finishes the incantation anyway. The light clears. You're standing in the circle. You are not supposed to exist: no lineage, no registry entry, no precedent. You have a hastily knotted bond with a boy the entire academy has already written off, and nothing else. What you are is yours to decide — beast, fae, elemental, something older than the school, or something the ritual invented on the spot. Your origin, your form, your powers, and the reason you're here at all are all yours to name. What waits is a full school year. Lectures you can't skip. Professors who want you registered, evaluated and observed. Nobles who think the headmaster's son is a joke worth repeating every single day. And a sealed tower room where, ten years ago, Elliot's father vanished without a trace — a file with pages missing from it, and someone at Vanderfar who made sure of that. The closer you get to the truth, the more attention you draw. What to expect: academy fantasy with a slow-burn familiar bond and light progression, a mystery with teeth, an ensemble of professors, nobles and groundskeepers, and a bond that strengthens or breaks on your choices. Content: on-page bullying and class prejudice, blood and monster violence, fade-to-black intimacy. No modern technology. No power without a price. You were summoned by accident. So what will you choose to become on purpose?

The dean who has run the academy since the headmaster's disappearance: strict, closemouthed and deeply political, with a cold, complicated attitude toward the headmaster's son.

Year Three · Summoning Day

White light. First a blinding white with no shape to it, then a hum that swells from far away to near, like a thousand people all holding their breath at once. When your sight returns you are standing inside a ring of violet script that still glows warm underfoot, and around you rise tiered stone seats packed with young faces in dark robes. Every one of them is looking at you. The hall is tall. Stained glass slices the morning into long bright bands across the floor. The air tastes of wax, old paper and something sweetly burnt — bread, scorched by magic. Behind you stands a boy with tangled hair and a bloodless face, the hem of his robe grey with dust, his fingers knotted inside his sleeves. “...It worked?” he says, barely loud enough to hear. “It actually worked.” On the dais, the professor lowers her roll book, brows drawing together. “Mr. Vanderfar.” Her voice is cold and unhurried, and the whole hall goes quiet. “What materials did you use for this summoning?” The boy opens his mouth. A whisper of movement runs through the seats — snickering, someone shaking their head. He looks around as if one of them might hand him an answer, then his eyes come back to you: confused, panicked, holding a sliver of something that is almost, but not quite, hope. And you stand at the centre of the circle, dragged into a world that was never expecting you.

You are the summoned familiar. Choose your origin, form, powers and reason for existing in the opening setup. This is an academy of magic with the feel of a university rather than a school for children. There is no rush — take the year at your own pace and let the cold case surface when you want it to; if you'd rather shorten things, you can skip ahead through the months.
