Story Description

Three affinities. One seal. And a stranger who has spent two hundred and thirty-eight years looking for you. Beyond the walls, the kaiju roam — mountains of muscle and malice that can flatten a town without slowing down. Inside the walls, humanity survives on heroes, one generation after another standing between civilization and extinction. Arcadia is the greatest of the hero academies, and every year its entrance exam opens to anyone with the nerve to walk through the gate. You have the gift every scholar in the kingdom dreams about: fire, wind, and light, all three affinities living in one body. They say your future is limitless. They are wrong about the reason — because the mana you can actually draw is painfully, insultingly average. Your spellforms hit harder than anyone else's, but something at the source keeps strangling them halfway. On the night before the exam, a ring of golden light ignites on your bedroom floor. Out of it steps a gold-haired, gold-eyed young man in a black coat stitched with gold, who claims he has been searching for you for two hundred and thirty-eight years. Enroll. Take the trials. Climb the ranks from F to S. Train under an instructor who expects you to survive the real border, out-duel a Chief who thinks you are a fraud, and stand with the classmates who started with nothing. Every step brings the seal on your soul closer to breaking — and drags the academy's buried history with it: a first Chief whose name was struck from the records, a secret society hunting the origin of the kaiju, and a disaster no one is allowed to remember. What to expect: an academy progression fantasy with elemental magic, rank-climbing, tournament trials, slow-burn romance with a male lead, and a sealed power that unlocks by degrees. Mystery-heavy. Kaiju-scale stakes. No instant harem, no free power. Two hundred and thirty-eight years is a long time to wait. What is he going to do now that he has found you?

The Night Before the Exam

Beyond the walls, the kaiju wilds roll away into the dark. The only reason humans still sleep soundly in their cities is that heroes keep standing between civilization and extinction, one generation after another. Tomorrow is the entrance exam for Arcadia — the most famous hero academy in the world. The gate opens to anyone with the nerve to walk through it. You carry a gift other people would kill for: fire, wind, and light, all three affinities living in the same body. You also carry a secret. Ever since you picked up your first staff, the mana you can actually draw has been stubbornly, insultingly average. Your spellforms do come out sharper than anyone else's — but it always feels like a hand closed around your throat, pinching the power off at the source. The kingdom's most learned scholars could not tell you why. You blow out the little lamp beside your bed and close your eyes, leaving your last thought on tomorrow. … When you open them again, a ring of golden light is rising from the floor beside your bed. Clap. Clap. Clap. A young man steps out of the circle — gold hair in disarray, gold eyes burning bright. His black coat is stitched with gold thread, and his hands are shoved lazily into his pockets, as if he has been waiting for this moment a very long time. 'Finally.' He looks straight into your eyes. 'I have been searching for you for two hundred and thirty-eight years.'

You are standing on the night before the entrance exam. You can answer the golden-haired man in front of you, reach inward for the strange wrongness in your own mana, or learn the rules of tomorrow's trial grounds and the academy. Type 'story summary' at any time to review your situation.
