Story Description

The war never ended. It just moved into an arena. When the last great war nearly bled the world dry, the surviving powers signed the Helios Treaty. No more invasions, no more armies grinding across borders — territory, military standing, and national honor would be settled in regulated armored competition instead. At the center of that order stands Helios Academy: a colossal island raised out of the sea, where hangars run the length of the coast, ranges hide in the hills, and row after row of history's most legendary tanks wait under open shelters for the cadets who crew them. You are a first-year, newly assigned to the academy's proudest branch: the Armored Division. Your cadet card has your face on it, your division number beneath it, and your nationality above it. From the moment you say which country you're from, you are standing under a flag. Your edge isn't a secret power. It's the one thing nobody here has time for: you treat a crew like people instead of parts. Every drill, every league match, every argument in the motor pool moves real numbers — battle score, tank condition, crew bond, division standing. Win, and your division earns better machines, better brackets, better funding. Lose, and someone gets a transfer letter. Standing in your way: Ilma von Horn, the German Division's undefeated ace, who has never once needed to be liked; Roman Berekov, who believes the league is simply the war fought by other means; and a faculty that would rather bury an incident than answer for it. What to expect: an alternate-history military academy progression fantasy — tank-on-tank duels, crew bonds, rival divisions, academy politics, and a slow-burn romance. Content notes: simulated warfare, explosions and injuries, war trauma in the backstory, intense competitive pressure. The treaty says the war is over. The scoreboard disagrees — and it has your name on it. What kind of commander will you be?

Characters

YouFirst-Year Cadet, Armored Division

A brand-new cadet. Name, division, tank type, and background are yours to set, and the road to command starts from there.

Viktor SteinInstructor, Armored Division

The Armored Division's veteran instructor, a former league ace who has led more seasons than he can count. Sharp-tongued, and far more concerned with keeping cadets alive than with their scores.

Ilma von HornAce Commander, German Division

The German Division's acknowledged ace, cold and exacting in command, who reads your arrival as one more confirmation of where she stands.

Yelena SokolovaLoader, Your Crew

The loader assigned to your crew. From the Soviet Division, blunt, loud, and the first person in the hull to treat you as one of her own.

Kenichi SatoChief of the Motor Pool

The Motor Pool chief, hands permanently black with grease, who can name a fault from the sound of an engine. Every commander on the island owes him something.

Claire MontagneStudent Council Officer / Senior Aristocrat

A senior from the French Division at the center of the Student Council. Impeccable, extraordinarily well connected, and both a guardian of the rules and the hardest observer on the island to read.

Roman BerekovSpearhead Commander, Soviet Division

The Soviet Division's lead assault commander. Ruthless, willing to stack the odds, and convinced the league is simply the old war fought by other means.

Orientation Day

The acceptance letter came three months ago, its corner stamped with the academy's gilt crest. It said very little, and you have been able to quote the one line that mattered ever since: you have been accepted. Now the island rises out of the sea ahead of you. It should not exist. Helios Academy was built up out of the water, and from the transport windows it just keeps going: hangars running the whole length of the coastline, training ranges folded into the hills, rank after rank of armored vehicles parked under open shelters with the dust of the last exercise still on their hulls. Dozens of flags snap in the morning wind, and the sound they make is like a forest that has learned to shout. The transport rolls through the gate and stops in Arrival Harbor, which is louder than anywhere you have ever stood. Your uniform is still stiff from the box. Your cadet card is pinned to your chest. Your bags are still in your hands. Then the loudspeakers crackle, and a voice cuts clean through the noise. 'Welcome to Helios Academy. Orientation begins in ten minutes. All first-years, proceed to your divisions.' You look down at the card. Under your photograph is a line of small print: your division, your cadet number. But your eyes stop on the field above it. Nationality. From the moment you say where you're from, you are standing under a flag. The only question left is what you do with it.

This is the opening. Start with setup: enter your name, choose your national division, your tank specialization, and your background. Your division decides your flag, who you can reach, and what league resources you start with; your tank type decides where you sit in a formation. Available divisions — Iron Bloc: Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania, Finland. Charter Bloc: Britain, the United States, France, the Soviet Union. You can befriend, ally with, or rival anyone from any division, but staying with your own unlocks more of its story and its resources. If you'd rather get your bearings first, you can simply watch the harbor and decide how to walk in.
