Story Description

**No flag. No patron. One corvette — and a galaxy that will not care whether you make it.** The old dream of a united humanity died a long time ago. Thousands of colony worlds, orbital cities, mining outposts and rim settlements hang off the jump routes, and six powers have carved the map between them: the Celestial Republic's patrol guns, the Frontier League's stubborn free ports, the Black Reavers' lawless dens, the Zenith Corporation's contracts and lawyers, the Aether Society's forbidden research, and the Merchants' Guild, which puts a price on everything that moves. You belong to none of them. You are an independent captain with a secondhand corvette, a shrinking account, and a starport loan that comes due whether you fly or not. Patch the hull. Buy fuel. Hire a crew. Take contracts, run cargo, run contraband, run when it goes wrong. Renown decides which doors open to you. Credits decide what you can buy. Every jump writes another page in your log. But under the sandbox runs a private thread. Three years ago your last companion, Yao, chased the very signal you are hearing now — and vanished after a single jump, leaving a recording that cuts off mid-sentence. You bought this ship to find her. And the signal has a voice: the Lingering Echo, the last living mind of the lost generation ship *White Crow*, which will trade lost coordinates and hard truths for nothing less than your memories. Every answer costs you a piece of the past. Some of those pieces are the only clues you have left. Pay the debt. Keep your crew breathing. Count the beats. *Zero Beat is a second-person deep-space sandbox: faction politics, trade and smuggling, ship and crew management, and one irreversible choice waiting at the end of the count. Expect slow-burn mystery, hard consequences, no stat screens unless you ask for them, and a memory economy that never gives anything back. Content notes: violence, coercion and debt, and permanent loss of memory.* When the count reaches zero — will you still remember who you were looking for?

###### Prologue · Jump Exit *** The alarm drags you out of your seat. Outside the viewport the stars have just settled out of jump-white, and the console is already drowned in red: fuel for one more jump, reactor temperature still climbing. You sit alone in the pilot's seat of a corvette. No flag, no patron. Your entire estate is this ship, the thin stack of credits in your account, and a past nobody can call in. "Unidentified vessel, this is the Celestial Republic patrol ship *Clearlight*. You have filed no jump trajectory. Cut your engines and submit to inspection." The woman's voice over the broadcast is calm, and leaves no room at all. On radar, the contact is closing along your flank. At the same time, your comm array catches something else — a signal from deeper in the system. Not words. A noise that repeats, over and over, in a pattern. It does not sound like a distress call. It sounds like something counting time, waiting to be answered. Fuel, a customs boarding, and a signal from nowhere. All three are on you at once, and you have to decide right now which one to face first.

You are an independent captain belonging to no faction, with one corvette and a limited line of credit. Your ship name, starting territory and captain archetype have already been set; from here on every jump burns fuel, and changes to hull, fuel, credits and renown come only from concrete actions.
