Story Description
**Ten thousand come north to become dragon riders. Fewer than thirty walk out with the wings on their shoulder.** The Kingdom of Selekien keeps pushing its borders outward under the sign of the Holy Phoenix, Seone—and no border bleeds like Valenkith, the frozen north where monsters run in packs, wild dragons circle the watchtowers, and raiders come harder every season. To hold that line, the crown founded the Darkon Order. Darkon does not care about bloodline. Nobles, commoners, drifters, even non-humans queue at the same registration table and give the same three answers: name, age, motive. What waits past that table is identical for everyone—the Three Trials, which grind candidates down by body first, then by nerve, then by whether a dragon will answer you at all. Only humans can bond with a dragon. Everyone else supports from behind the walls. Fewer than thirty are taken each intake. The rest leave as corpses, or as cripples. You have one turn at the table. Afterwards, Commander Theodore has already promised the crowd there will be no goodbyes. **What to expect:** dark military fantasy and dragon-rider progression. Low magic, grounded stakes, an ensemble of rivals and comrades, permanent injuries, and real character death. Fade-to-black on intimacy; on-page violence and loss. The Thirteenth Selection has begun. What are you willing to trade for a dragon's name?
Characters
The candidate you play. Name, age, background, and motive for enlisting are yours to set; whether you pass the Three Trials, and whether you ever bond with a dragon, depends entirely on your own choices.
Darkon's commander, covered in old scars, silent and hard. The way he stands on the stone platform looking down at the candidates is itself an order.
The registrar sitting behind the enlistment table. His hands are a map of frost-cracked old injuries, his voice is fast and hard—and he records every ledger entry to the letter.
Second daughter of a great southern house, formally trained in sword and horse, dressed immaculately even at registration. She treats selection as something she is owed.
A commoner who drifted up from the south: thin, talkative, arms covered in work scars. Darkon's mess hall is, to him, a reason to keep living.
A non-human who cannot bond with a dragon, serving as Darkon's physician. Her fingertips can read the change in a wound and a pulse, and she has little patience for human ideas of honor or prejudice.
A veteran dragon rider with an old wound across his forehead, running the first stage of the trials. He curses recruits without mercy in training, and he never looks away when one of them dies.
