Story Description
They handed you a dragon that won't come when you call. You have three months to make it answer. At Fort Darkon, on the frozen northern edge of Valenkieth, the thirteenth class of riders has just been sworn in. Thirty recruits, four to a squad, three months of work: flight fundamentals with your bonded dragon, combat theory and formations, patrol duty beside veterans, and the slow, dangerous coaxing of magic that hasn't awakened yet. Dragon riders are the kingdom's sharpest edge — and its cheapest to replace. Only humans can bond with a dragon. The Unbonded serve the fort as healers, smiths, and quartermasters. Every rider is issued a dragon. Nobody is issued its trust. Your first morning goes badly. Frostwing, the gray-white fledgling signed to your name, tears out of the stables and refuses to let you within ten paces of it, in front of the entire square. The deputy commander laughs. The training officer writes your name on the same line as the dragon and tells you to fix it by tomorrow — or take whatever beast the others didn't want. What follows is measured in duty rosters and scars. A dragon bond that only deepens through shared risk. Magic that burns you every time you reach for it. Squadmates from noble houses, hunting villages, and the open road, who will either learn to carry each other or bury each other. And past the walls, a border that is failing: monsters pressing south, wild dragons circling, and the north wind that has never once stopped. The instructors keep a ledger. Names come off it all the time. What to expect: a grounded, low-magic dark fantasy of dragon riders, training arcs, and squad bonds, with tracked stats — Physique, Magic Potential, Dragon Affinity, and Comradeship — and consequences that stick. Academy-pressure pacing, slow-burn bonding, real risk of death, injury, and discharge. Intimacy fades to black. Violence does not. Three months. One dragon. One roster with room for maybe half of you. When the snow breaks and the horns sound — will your name still be on it?
Characters
A rider just out of the Selection Trials and newly sworn into the thirteenth class. Name, background, talent, and training focus are entirely the player's to decide.
Darkon's commander, covered in old scars, silent and hard. The way he looks down at recruits from the stone platform is itself an order.
Darkon's deputy commander, born a commoner and risen on war merit alone. Quick to laugh, blunt, merciless in the mouth — he reads the training schedule like tavern specials and remembers every recruit's weak point.
Darkon's first knight, who wears an old feather-crested helmet and handles squad assignments and duty rotations. He says little; his rules are cut deeper than stone.
A rider of your own class — fierce, competitive, and a natural in the air. The last person in the training yard to admit defeat, and possibly your most dependable partner.
One of the Unbonded, unable to bond with a dragon, and Fort Darkon's physician. Her fingertips read wounds and blood, and she has little patience for human notions of honor or human prejudice.
The fledgling bonded to the player, silver-white and wary, not yet trusting its rider. Real affinity will take time and shared hardship.
